Prospective Leaders

Interested in volunteering to be a BSA registered Adult Leader?

This section will give prospective adult leaders the information they need to successfully register with the BSA.


1. Complete Youth Protection Training (YPT)

YPT can be accessed at my.scouting.org. You should have created an account when you initially registered your scout. When complete, save a pdf of your completion certificate

2. Complete Diocese of San Jose Volunteer Requirements

Complete all Live Scan fingerprinting, training, and adult waiver requirements on this page. When complete, email your certificate of completion for the Safe Environment Training and completed and signed Adult Waiver form to azaleah.dumanig@dsj.org.

3. Complete the BSA Adult Leader Application

Review and fill out the BSA Adult Leader Application here completely, including the Additional Disclosures & Background Check Authorization. Submission of the form electronically is preferred. Ask the Cubmaster for the appropriate position code or look it up here. Email the completed form to azaleah.dumanig@dsj.org.

Below are more things you can do to be a successful adult leader!

Get your uniform

Direct contact leaders are required to wear the official BSA Adult Leader uniform at all scouting events where scouts are present. Uniforms can be purchased from scoutshop.org or at the South Bay Scout Shop located at 970 W. Julian St., San Jose.

Complete Position Specific Training

To be considered "Position Trained" for your position, complete all the requirements listed on the my.scouting.org My Training > Requirements tab. This document lists requirements for all positions. Once complete, you can add the "Trained" patch to your uniform!

Participate in Council Training Opportunties

Find out about training being offered here. Considering finding time to complete Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) training which will be required for Webelos leaders in order to camp.

Earn the Den Leader Training Award

Complete the requirements for this award (some of which were discussed above). Once earned, you can add the knot to your uniform!
